SPRITE has an ongoing commitment to educate and engage our local Sheffield communities with the rivers that originally gave rise to our city. As well as the full range of activities, working parties and conservation initiatives, we have several dedicated programmes to help bring the value and vitality of our rivers to life.
First and foremost is our adoption of the Wild Trout Trust's "Mayfly in the Classroom". In fact, this initiative was developed and first piloted in Sheffield by Paul Gaskell of the Wild Trout Trust. The material and activities undertaken in this programme teach participants about the functioning and value of healthy rivers and the surrounding riverbank ecosystems. It can be tailored to suit ages from 6 through to 16 (or even older!)
We also use the activity of responsible angling to teach youngsters and adults about the freshwater ecosystems of our rivers - as well as providing a focus for healthy outdoor recreation in a lifelong activity; an activity that can be practiced at low, medium and high levels of physical exertion!
